My Top Tracks (Source: Soundexchange)

Soundexchange reports arrived, and while you’re bullish on vein-opening despair (“Run”), you’re digging the new stuff even more (“Waving Goodbye”), which made me high-five myself. Special thank you for unearthing one of my personal favorites, “Better Here,” a deep cut that took a long time and a lot of patience to bring to...

Mike Errico: Vicious Circle, Rob Thomas, Guitar World and More

Happy summer, folks. I’ve been working like a beast over here, some in front of the curtain, some behind it. But first: Available exclusively at Bandcamp: the rare electronic-inspired EP that delved into Big Beat, R&B and folk. Originally released in the late ’90s, “Springtime” was recently included in WNYC’s 2014 playlist, “Six Songs for Spring.” 1. Daylight 2. Sooner or Later 3. Springtime 4. On This Train 5. Someday BUY VICIOUS CIRCLE ON BANDCAMP That’s Professor Errico to you… My latest songwriting classes at NYU and Wesleyan University have been amazing, and I’ve been able to re-connect with old friends to talk about the thing we love: wine. I MEAN SONGWRITING…songwriting. Right. That. Special Thanks: Rob Thomas “Three things in music that will never go out of style: the song; the song; and the song.” Multiplatinum artist Rob Thomas took time out to come to NYU and talk to the students about how he approaches songwriting, collaboration and “the beast” that is the industry. Special Thanks: Pete Ganbarg The head of A&R for Atlantic Records came to Wesleyan to discuss his “populist’s ears,” his thinking behind successes with Santana, Daughtry, Train (to name a few), and his hunger for the next great song. Special Thanks: Ed Grauer and Peter Nashel Double Shot: Cash Money Records’ legal counsel and the force behind Duotone Audio Group let my Wesleyan class in on the business side of songwriting: publishing, copyright, sample clearance, mechanicals, synch…the critical stuff that turns passion into a living. Video Guitar Lessons for Guitar World Magazine In a recent issue of Guitar World, I explained my percussive acoustic...

Special Thanks: Steve Wariner

Country Music Hall of Famer @stevewariner joined me at @CliveDavisInst at @nyuniversity to talk songwriting. What a semester it’s been. Special thanks to my guest speaker, Country Music Hall of Famer Steve Wariner, who talked about his own writing process, as well as his work with Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Dottie West, and so many great artists and writers. Toward the end of class, one of the students asked if he’d play a little, and he broke out “Tattoos of Life” and “Two Teardrops” solo. What a semester it’s been. Break out the violet cardigan sweaters: I am teaching songwriting at NYU’s Clive Davis School of the Recording Arts this fall. We’ve been focusing on the establishment of a personal songwriting voice, and oh, we’ve been writing. And...
Scott Jacoby and me on the cover of Playback magazine

Scott Jacoby and me on the cover of Playback magazine

I hung out at Scott Jacoby’s studio yesterday, watched him mix a track, had lunch, shot the breeze, etc. He was so great to come up to my class at Yale, and we just kinda hit it off, personally, too. (Bob Donnelly, who recommended him to me, is rarely wrong.) Inspired by Scott and his workspace, I decided I would take the weekend to clean up around here. One idea was to scan my press clippings and get rid of the fire hazard that is all the paper that has accumulated. I worked my paper shredder until the OVERHEAT light came on (I didn’t even know it had one), and in the middle of the purge, I picked up a PLAYBACK mag from 2011 – take a look at the bottom of the cover page… I mean, I know I’m into Omens and all, but you have to admit: that’s kind of...

Special Thanks: Eliot Van Buskirk, Mantis Evar

Special thanks to guest speakers Eliot Van Buskirk (Evolver.fm) and Mantis Evar (Indaba Music), who spoke about the disruptive technologies at the bleeding edge of music creation, consumption and dissemination. Flying cars were not ruled out. Thank God. Break out the threadbare cardigan sweaters: I will be teaching a seminar at Yale University entitled “The Art and Business of Songwriting.” Course description: “Music sits at the forefront of creative and technological revolutions, and songwriting remains the fundamental form of its expression. This seminar will focus on establishing a personal songwriting voice, and then explore a song’s application within the fundamentally shifting industries of film, TV and the Web via crowd sourcing, collaboration and copyright.” Sounds good, right?
