Scott Jacoby and me on the cover of Playback magazine

Scott Jacoby and me on the cover of Playback magazine

I hung out at Scott Jacoby’s studio yesterday, watched him mix a track, had lunch, shot the breeze, etc. He was so great to come up to my class at Yale, and we just kinda hit it off, personally, too. (Bob Donnelly, who recommended him to me, is rarely wrong.) Inspired by Scott and his workspace, I decided I would take the weekend to clean up around here. One idea was to scan my press clippings and get rid of the fire hazard that is all the paper that has accumulated. I worked my paper shredder until the OVERHEAT light came on (I didn’t even know it had one), and in the middle of the purge, I picked up a PLAYBACK mag from 2011 – take a look at the bottom of the cover page… I mean, I know I’m into Omens and all, but you have to admit: that’s kind of...
Last Day of Class, “The Art and Business of Songwriting” at Yale

Last Day of Class, “The Art and Business of Songwriting” at Yale

Yesterday was the last day of my course, “The Art and Business of Songwriting,” at Yale. Thanks again to guest speakers Amanda Palmer, Jonathan Coulton, Ryan Miller, writer/producer Scott Jacoby, entertainment attorney Bob Donnelly, Mantis Evar (co-founder of Indaba Music), and Eliot Van Buskirk (Evolver.fm). It’s been a fantastic experience for the students, and revelatory for me. Final presentations were great, and celebratory pizza at BAR on Crown Street was delicious. Break out the threadbare cardigan sweaters: my seminar at Yale University is entitled “The Art and Business of Songwriting.” Course description: “Music sits at the forefront of creative and technological revolutions, and songwriting remains the fundamental form of its expression. This seminar will focus on establishing a personal songwriting voice, and then explore a song’s application within the fundamentally shifting industries of film, TV and the Web via crowd sourcing, collaboration and copyright.” Sounds good, right? Special Thanks: Eliot Van Buskirk, Mantis Evar

Special thanks to guest speakers Eliot Van Buskirk (Evolver.fm) and Mantis Evar (Indaba Music), who spoke about the disruptive technologies at the bleeding edge of music creation, consumption and dissemination. Flying cars were not ruled out. Thank God.
